Osmosis Flashcards
Osmosis
The movement of water from a high water potential to a low water potential
Potato in pure water solution
The potation increased in mass because water moved into the potato. Water moved from high w.p. in the tube to low w.p. in the potato across the partially permeable membrane
Potato in strong salt solution
The potation decreased in mass because water moved out of the potato. Water moved from high w.p. in the potation to low w.p. in the tube across the partially permeable membrane
Potato in the mild salt solution
Nothing happeded. The w.p. in the potato and the tube was very similar, therefore osmosis did not take place
Safety aspects
Do not cut yourself with the scalpel
Reliability
How repeatable an experiment is, how many times can you repeat it and get the same results
Accurate
How close it is to the true value
Precise
How detailed the results are that you are gathering. More decimal places = more precise
Flaccid
A plant cell that has lost its internal pressure, when the cytoplasm no longer pushes angains the cell wall
Plasmolysed
A plant celll that has lost water by osmosis, resulting in the cell contents shrinking and the cell membrane and cytoplasm pulling away from the cell wall
Turgid
A plant cell with hig internal pressure, so that the cytoplasm pushes agains the cell wall
