2c Flashcards
Decomposition of proteins
Protein —(protease)—> Amino acids
Enzymes
Biological catalysts in metabolic reactions
Test for glucose
- Benedicts solution turns from blue to brick red.
1. Add sample and water to test tube.
2. Mix.
3. Add bendicts solution.
4. Leave in water bath.
Test for proteins
- Biruet solutions (potassium hydroxide and copper sulphate) goes from blue to purple.
- Add sample to biruet
Test for lipids
Ethanol and water solution goes from colourless to white/cloudy
1. Add sample and ethanol to test tube.
2. Mix.
3. Add solution to a test tube with cold wter.
Effect of pH on enzymes
If enzymes are not at their optimum pH they will become denatured.
Denatured
There has been a change in the active site of an enzyme
Effect of temperature on enzymes
Optimum temperature for enzymes is 37ºC (body temperature).
At cold temperatures, enzymes have little kinetic energy, the enzyme doesen’t collide.
At high temperatures, the enzymes get denatured(destroyed), their shape is changed.
Decomposition of starch
Starch —(amylase)—> Maltose —(maltease)—> Glucose
Decomposition of lipids
Lipids —(lipase)—> Fatty acids and glycerol
