Osmoregulation and The Kidneys Flashcards
1
Q
What is Osmoregulation?
A
Regulating water content.
2
Q
What happens during Filtration in the nephrons?
A
- The liquid part of the blood is forced out of the glomerulus and into the Bowman’s capsule at high pressure.
- Bigger molecules (e.g. proteins) and blood cells can’t pass through.
3
Q
What happens during the selective reabsorption in the nephrons?
A
- All glucose is selectively reabsorbed: it’s moved back into the blood against a concentration gradient.
- Sufficient ions are reabsorbed.
- Sufficient water is reabsorbed.
4
Q
What happens during the final stage of a nephron?
A
Reabsorption of water by osmosis.
