OSI Model & TCP/IP Flashcards
What is the OSI Model?
The Open Systems Interconnection Model standardizes and categorizes different functions within a network.
How many Layers are in the OSI Model?
There are 7 Layers in the OSI Model
What are the 7 Layers of the OSI Model
Physical Layer
Data Link Layer
Network Layer
Transport Layer
Session Layer
Presentation Layer
Application Layer
What is the Physical Layer?
Defines the physical characteristics used to transfer data between devices.
What is the Data Link Layer?
Responsible for the node-to-node delivery of data, to ensure error free transmission along with the encoding and decoding of data.
What is the Network Layer?
Provides connectivity between end hosts on different networks, Logical (IP Addresses) and Physical (MAC Addresses) addressing, and routing between sources and destinations.
What is the Transport Layer?
Segments data between end hosts while providing flow and error control to ensure proper data transmission.
What is the Session Layer?
Establishes, maintains, and terminates connections between local and remote applications.
What is the Presentation Layer?
Translates data formats between the application and network formats while handling encryption, decryption and compression.
What is the Application Layer?
Provides network services to end user applications and facilitates user interactions.
What is Encapsulation?
