OSI Model Flashcards
1
Q
Physical Layer
A
- layer at which bits are actually sent out across through wire or wireless media
- we can “touch” the physical layer
2
Q
Data Link Layer
A
- translates data into binary and also converts back
- error detection
- establishment of protocols used for data transmission
- performs addressing at a physical layer
3
Q
Network Layer
A
- identifies other computers on the network through an addressing scheme (known as “routing”) specific to the network protocol in use
4
Q
Transport Layer
A
- breaks up messages into “packets” of similar size and numbering them so that they can be properly reassembled when received
5
Q
Session Layer
A
- sets up a “session” (or the “handshaking”) between two computers
- session control and making certain that the session is terminated when finished
6
Q
Presentation Layer
A
- data is compressed and encrypted in preparation for transmission
7
Q
Application Layer
A
- is the software that you run in your workstation
8

OSI
A
Open Systems Interconnection
9
