OSI Model Flashcards
Layer 7
Application layer - consists of end user protocols e.g SMTP, FTP and HTTP
Layer 6
Presentation layer - apply encryption and translate the data between devices and operating systems. Includes data compression and mapped drives
Protocols include: SSL, SSH, IMAP
Layer 5
Session layer - that controls the dialogue between the computers. Connections include:
Simplex
Half duplex
Full duplex
Layer 4
Transport layer - tries to ensure an error free transmission of message through layers 3 and 1
Protocols include: UDP, TCP
Layer 3
Network layer - this is the layer dedicated to routing information.
Devices include: routers and managed switches
Protocols include: IPv4/6, RIP, OSPF, IPX, ARP, ICMP
VLAN is also layer 3 technology
Layer 2
Data link layer - establishes, maintains and deciphers how transfer is accomplished over the physical layer.
The data layer breaks down packets/ reassembles them upon transport/reviving
Mac addresses, switches and the PPP protocol (point to point) are at this layer
Layer 1
Physical layer - this handles cables, patch panels and network topologies
