General MTA Flashcards
LAN
Local area network - used at a home or workplace
WAN
Wide area network - large scale network that covers a huge geographical area e.g the internet
MAN
Metropolitan area network - a large network that covers the size of a city
CAN
Campus area network - covers a network such as a university or college
PAN
Personal area network - used low power technology such as Bluetooth
CSMA/CA
Carrier sense multiple access / collision avoidance - nodes on the network broadcast when they are using the network and when they have finished to avoid collisions
Used in W I R E L E S S networks
CSMA/CD
Carrier sense multiple access/ collision detection - all nodes on the network are listening out for other nodes and will wait until the transmission media is idle before communicating
used in W I R E D networks
Token passing
Used in ring topologies to ensure that collisions are impossible. A virtual token is passed and a node must be in possession of the token before transmitting
Unicast
Data is sent from 1 to 1
Multicast
Data is sent 1 to many
Broadcast
Data is sent 1 to all
Any cast
Data is sent 1 to many where a device can opt to receive the signal
What does a device need to be on a network?
A network interface card
A host address
(Default gateway is required for internet but not local networking)
Class A address
1 - 126
Subnet mask: 255.0.0.0
Class B address
