OSHA 1910.1096 Flashcards
Radiation
Alpha, Beta, Gamma rays, Neutrons, High-speed electrons/protons, other atomic particles
Radioactive Material
Means any material which emits, by spontaneous nuclear disintegration, corpuscular or electromagnetic emanations
Restricted area
Means any area access to which is controlled by the employer for purpose of protection of individuals from exposure to radiation or radioactive material.
Dose
Means the quantity of ionizing radiation absorbed, per unit of mass, by the body or by any portion of the body.
Rad
Means a measure if the dose of any ionizing radiation to body tissue in terms of the energy absorbed per unit of mass of the tissue.
Rem
Means a measure of the dose of any ionizing radiation to body tissue in terms of its estimated biological effect relative to a dose of 1 roentgen of X-rays.
1 Rem equivalent X-ray and gamma
1 roentgen
1 Rem equivalent of Beta/Gamma
1 Rad
1 Rem equivalent for neutrons and high energy protons
.1 Rad
1 Rem equivalent for particles heavier than protons and have suffice to energy to reach the lens of the eye
.05 Rad
1 Rem equivalent for neutron fluxes
Gamma / X-Ray Rad to Rem threshold
Up to energies of 3 MeV
One quarter dose limit
Whole body - 1.25 Rem
Hands, Feet - 18.75 Rem
Skin - 7.5
Permitted so long as:
Whole body no greater than 3 Rem in a quarter and total dose shall not exceed 5(N-18) rems where N is age
