Roentgen
A measure of gamma/x-ray interaction in air
Rad
Is a unit of absorbed dose. Amount of energy absorbed in some material. 1 Rad = 0.01 joules/kilogram
REM
Is a unit of effective dose which takes into account relative biological effectiveness of the different forms of radiation.
Alpha particle
2 neutrons and 2 protons emitted from the nucleus. Travels only a few inches in air.
Beta particle
Electron ejected from the nucleus. Can travel several feet in air.
Whole body limit (OSHA)
1.25 rem per calendar quarter
Extremities limit (OSHA)
18.75 rem per calendar quarter
Skin exposure limit (OSHA)
