Oscillator Wave Forms Flashcards
What is a sine wave?
The fundamental building block of sound which can be natural or synthetic.
What is a square wave?
How many harmonics above their fundamental frequency , have a much brighter, sharper timbre. Usually rich harmonically due to steep changes in wave.
What is a sawtooth wave?
Creates harmonically richer sound has harmonic decay and “buzzy” timbre.
What is a triangle wave?
Shares similarities to sawtooth wave but has a softer timbre than square or saw waves nearer to a sine wave.
What are partials?
Any frequency that helps create the main frequency.
What is frequency masking?
when the perception of one sound is affected by the presence of another sound.
What is a fundamental frequency?
The Loudest frequency that the brain hears or receives.
What is a overtone?
Any frequency except the fundamental frequency.
What is a harmonic?
Is the multiple frequency of the fundamental frequency
What is inharmonicity ?
how close a frequency is to becoming a multiple of the fundamental frequency
What is sound spectrum?
any sound signal that can be measured or decomposed along a continuous variable such as energy
What is Timbre?
What a sound consists of
What is an attack?
how quick or loud a sound is created
What is sustain?
how long a sound is retained at its max volume
What is decay?
how long it takes for a sound to drop off to its end
