Oscillations Flashcards
What happens when an object is dampened?
It does not oscillate
When does the maximum resonance occur?
When the driving force = natural frequency
What happens to energy during simple harmonic motion?
Energy is conserved in the system
How can energy be lost in simple harmonic motion?
When dampening occurs and energy is lost to fictional forces
What is an oscillation?
A regular repeated motion around a fixed point
What is the equation for simple harmonic motion?
F = -kx
What is the acceleration equation for simple harmonic motion?
a = -(angular velocity)^2x
How do you work out the period of simple harmonic motion?
T = square root(L/G) x 2(Pie)
What are the two requirements for simple harmonic motion?
- Once displaced from the equilibrium, there must be a restoring force to get it back there
- The restoring force is proportional to the displacement
