OSCILLATIONS Flashcards
what is an oscillation
repeatedly moves back and forth on either side of some fixed position, to which it returns when the oscillation ceases
what is natural frequency
vibrating in free oscillation, it will vibrate at a frequency called natural frequency
what is the total energy
potential + kinetic energy
what is the equation with links, K, a, x
a=-kx
where acceleration is directly proportional to the negative value x. Which is the displacement from the equilibrium position.
explain the equation a=-w^2x
the K constant can be written as the angular frequency (w) of the oscillations.
we can also sub in 2πf if we only have the normal frequency.
how do you calculate velocity for a swinging body in shm
v=±w√(A^2 - X^2)
A is the amplitude
what are solutions to the equation a=-w^2 x
X=Acoswt, X=Asinwt
we use depending on where the pendulum is
t is the time in seconds and A is the amplitude=x
what are the characteristics of shm
-zero velocity at maximum displacement
-max velocity at 0 displacement
-max acceleration at max displacement
-velocity changes smoothly and symmetric on either side of the equilibrium
what is damping
reducing the amplitude of an oscillation with time, due to energy being removed from the system
what is driving frequency
the frequency of the driving force applied to the pendulum
