HOOKES LAW Flashcards
what is plastic deformation
when the material has exceeded its elastic limit.
what is elastic deformation
when the material will revert back to its original shape after being extended.
what is a tensile force
cause tension in an object.
for there to be tension, there must be equal and opposite forces.
what is the limit of proportionality
the point at which the extension is no longer proportional to the force
what is the elastic limit
beyond this point the material will not show elastic behaviour.
what is plastic behaviour
plastic deformation will be seen when the load is removed and the material will not return to its original shape.
what is fracture
this is the point at which the material will break.
Hooke’s law
states that the extension of an object is proportional to the force that causes it, provided the elastic limit is not exceeded.
what is the equation for hooke’s law
F=Kx
where F is the force causing extension x, and k is known as the force constant.
what is work done to stretch a wire using F and using K
e=1/2Fx
e=1/2Kx^2
what is stress
force per unit cross-sectional area. it has units of Nm^-2 or Pa.
what is strain
extension per unit length. it has no units and is therefore dimensionless.
what is ductile
ones with extensive plastic regions.
what is brittle
distort very little. fracture instead of plastic deformation
what is malleable
material can be hammered or beaten into flat sheets and show extensive plastic deformation when subjected to compressive forces.
