OS III Exam III Flashcards
What are the forms of tactile sensation?
Pain, temperature, pressure, vibration, texture
What are two somatic modalities?
Tactile sensation and proprioception
What is sensory adaptation?
Decreased neural activity with sustained stimulus. Includes rapid and slow adapting.
How do sensory receptor proteins operate?
TRP type ion-channels, respond to ONE adequate stimulus.
What are four different types of sensory receptors?
Cold, heat, nociceptor, mechanoreceptor. Nociceptors include cold and heat activated channels.
How are compound action potentials distinguished in nerve fibers?
Based upon diameter of the nerve and myelination.
Naming conventions: Roman numerals vs. numbers?
Motor vs. sensory
Specify: Aalpha, Abeta, Adelta, C
Motor/proprioception, light touch, fast pain, slow pain
How many neurons connect to a single cutaneous receptive field?
ONE
Name the receptors for discriminative touch.
Merkel cells, Ruffini corpuscles, Pacinian corpuscles, Meissner corpuscles, hair follicle.
Which mechanoreceptors are slow adapting? fast adapting?
Slow: merkel cells, ruffini corpuscles
Fast: pacinian corpuscles, meissner corpuscles, hair follicle
Merkel cells are found in the_________and relay__________.
Epidermis, form/texture (scanning by touch)
Ruffini corpuscles are found in the _________and detect__________.
Dermis, stretch. (Spindle shaped cells)
Pacinian corpuscles are found in the_________and respond to_________.
Dermis of glabrous skin, vibration. (Onion shaped lamellar cells)
Meissner corpuscles are found in the _____________and respond to ___________.
Dermis (just deep to epidermis), movement across skin.
