Orthoses Indications Flashcards
1
Q
AFO
A
- CP
- Muscular Dystrophy
- Stroke
- MS (GBS, ataxia, PD)
- Trauma (TBI, peripheral nerve injury, SCI, ankle injury, post-surgical support)
2
Q
KAFO
A
- <3-/5 quads strength
- Ligamentous laxity
- Maximum knee control needed (medial/lateral, sagittal)– helps control valgus, varus, and recurvatum
3
Q
KO
A
- Ligamentous laxity (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL)
- Unilateral compartment offloading (OA pt. population)
4
Q
FO
A
- Diabetic offloading
- PF
- Ankle sprain
- Stress Fx.
- Metatarsalalgia
- Morton’s Neuroma
- Tendonitis
- 1st MP joint sprain
- Pes planus/cavus
- Hallux valgus
- Tarsal tunnel
- Rearfoot varus/valgus
- Forefoot ab/adduction
5
Q
Solid Ankle AFO
A
- weak or absent strength (<3+)
- Absent proprioception
- Berg Balance <43
- Coronal Instability of ankle
6
Q
AAFO (Active AFO)
A
- Coronal ankle instability
- Posterior tibialis deficiency
- Hindfoot valgus
- Over-pronation
- PF/DF strength is normal
7
Q
Simple Leaf Spring AFO
A
- DF grade 4 or less
- DF strength maintains throughout activity
- Coronal control about the ankle is present
8
Q
Articulated AFO with PF stop and DF assist
A
- Progressive DF weakness and coronal instability
- Induces immediate knee flexion moment
- Eliminates foot slap
- Prevents foot drop
- Requires 4 quad strength
- When rapid DF fatigue occurs
9
Q
Articulated AFO w/Stop
A
- PF weakness
- DF stop
- Allow controlled tibial progression
- Prevents drop off in TSt to lack of PF strength
10
Q
Ground Reaction AFO
A
- Quads & PF weakness
- Provides knee extension moment against the tibial cuff during midstance
- Must have DF stop to prevent tibial progression
11
Q
Example Wear Schedule
A
Days 1-2: 15-30 min. NWB if necessary
Days 3-7: WB, 15-30 min. intervals
Days 8+: extend WB as tolerated
