Critical Events: Gait Flashcards
Initial Contact
Moment when foot hits the ground
1. Heel first contact
2. Initiation of heel rocker
3. Impact deceleration
Loading Response
Weight rapidly transferred onto outstretched limb
1. Progression of heel rocker
2. Restrained ankle PF
3. Sustained hip flexion
Midstance
Body progresses over a single, stable limb
1. Ankle rocker
2. Restrained ankle DF
3. Restrained knee extension
4. Frontal plane hip stabilization
Terminal Stance
Body moves ahead of limb and weight is transferred to forefoot
1. Initiation of forefoot rocker
2. Controlled ankle DF with heel rise
3. Trailing limb posture
4. Free forward fall
Preswing
Rapid unloading of limb occurs as weight is transferred to contralateral limb
1. Adequate knee flexion
2. Adequate ankle PF
Initial Swing
Thigh begins to advance as the foot comes up off the floor
1. Adequate knee flexion
2. Adequate hip flexion
Mid-Swing
Thigh continues to advance as the knee begins to extend
1. Adequate hip flexion
2. Adequate ankle DF
Terminal Swing
Knee extends as limb prepares for contact with the ground
1. Deceleration of hip flexion
2. Inhibition of hip flexion
3. Deceleration of knee extension
4. Adequate knee extension
5. Adequate ankle DF
