Orthopedics Flashcards
Orthopedic disorders Assessment
Subjective Assessment: pain, weakness, limitation, crepitation
Objective Assessment:
Swelling, Redness
PMH/PSH, meds, diet & Exercies, supplements, Assistive Devices
Gerontological Considerations Orthopedic Disorders
Mild discomfort -> Chronic Pain, immobility
Loss of strength contributes to difficulty w/ balance increasing risk for falls
Tendons and ligaments are less flexible, movement more rigid
Affects ability to perform self care
Primary prevention for orthopedic disorders
Walker/Cane for assistance Eliminate Scatter Rugs Regular weight-bearing exercises Maintain normal weight Wear supportive shoes
Stretching or tearing of ligaments
Sprain
Stretching or tearing of muscle or tendon
Strain
When bone slips out of a joint
Dislocation
Pain caused by repetitive movement and overuse
Repetitive strain injury
RICE
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation
RICE Patent and family Education: REST
Limit weight-bearing for 48 hrs
Use cane/crutch on uninsured side
RICE pt and family education: ICE
Ice for 20 min at a time
Don’t place directly on skin
RICE pt and family education: COMPRESSION
Loosen compression bandage if numbness, tingling or swelling distal to injury develops
RICE pt and family education: ELEVATION
Keep injured extremity elevated on a pillow above heart level to reduce swelling and pain
When is the best time to place ice on a wound?
Immediately during the acute phase (q20min x 24-48hr)
Repetitive use injury
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Bursitis
Median nerve is compressed which results in weakness and tingling
Carpal tunnel syndrome
