Orthopaedics Flashcards
1
Q
Treatment of scaphoid fracture
A
Short arm plaster with thumb spica
XR in 2/52 –> if normal can remove
2
Q
Compression bandage
A
soft tissue injury
3
Q
Removable wrist splint
A
buckle # which are not displaced or angulated
4
Q
short arm full plaster
A
displaced #
to maintain reduction
- for older kids as younger need above the elbow
5
Q
Back slab
A
- non displaced #
- minor injuries
- risk of swelling
- crush injuries
- open #
6
Q
Supracondylar #
A
- Risk of injuring brachial artery if displaced (divides into radial and ulnar artery AFTER the elbow
- Risk of median nerve injury –> if displaced # causes impingement
- Ulnar nerve is NOT usually affected
- 7% will get radial nerve injury (wrist drop, can’t hitch hike)
- posterior fat pad visible on XR is suspicious for this injury as fat pad normally sits on olecranon fossa and is not normally visible unless elevated by a haemoarthrosis
7
Q
Monteggia’s injury
A
Proximal ulnar # + radial head dislocation
–> requires reduction
On XR-
Displaced anterior humeral line (#) and Radiocapitellar line (radial head dislocation)
