Orthopaedic examination - stifle Flashcards
What type of joint is the stifle?
complex hinge joint
What landmarks of the stifle should be palpated?
The patella, the straight patellar ligament and the tibial tuberosity. Fibular head, lateral condyle, lateral fabella
Where can effusion be palpated in the stifle?
lateral and medial to the straight patellar ligament
Range of motion of the stifle?
flexion to extention 40 - 160 degrees
When is patellar luxation most easy to apprexiate?
Starting in full exttention and then gradually flexing the stifle.
How can patellar stability be tested?
With internal and external rotation of the tibia whilst the stifle is flexed, placing digital pressure from lateral or medial on the patella
which tests can be performed to control craniocaudal stifle stability?
Cranial drawer test
Tibial thrust test
When can false positives occur in cranial drawer test?
Young puppies
some dogs that have mild cranial instability of the tibia relative to the femur
