orthomyxoviridae Flashcards
1
Q
general characteristics:
- genetic material
- enveloped?
- important viruses
A
ssRNA
ENVELOPED (not stable)
EIV, AIV, SIV
2
Q
Equine Influenza Virus (EIV)
- types of dz virus causes
- method of transmission
- zoonotic?
- does it change/recombine/mutate
- distribution
- diagnosis
- differential diagnosis
- control
A
- high fever, cough, nasal discharge, ocular discharge, swollen lymph nodes
- inhalation of infected particles, contact. NOT VIREMIC. stays in resp tract.
- not zoonotic
- high capacity for recombination and genetic shift
- worldwide dist
- nasal swab for virus isolation/ ELISA/PCR
hemagglutination inhibition
- EAV and EHV-1
- vaccination
3
Q
AIV (Avian influenza virus)
- types of dz virus causes
- method of transmission
- zoonotic?
- does it change/recombine/mutate
- distribution
- diagnosis
- differential diagnosis
- control
A
- (type A influenza- humans, birds, pigs, horses). can have low pathogenic (LPAI) - no clinical signs
High pathogenic (HPAI)- H5 or H7. watery diarrhea, depression, hemorrhagic necrosis, edema. multiorgan failure-> death
- transmitted through saliva, feces, contaminated feed and water
- is zoonotic!
- can undergo genetic drift (pt mutation in hemagglutinin) or antigenic shirt- one cell infected with dif virus strains that combine to form a new virus
- worldwide
- PCR, virus isolation of trachea, lungs, brain, spleen, cloaca, Ag capture ELISA, hemagglutination assay
- newcastle, infectious laryngotracheitis
- surveillance and testing of migratory birds
4
Q
SIV (swine influenza virus)
- types of dz virus causes
- method of transmission
- zoonotic?
- does it change/recombine/mutate
- distribution
- diagnosis
- differential diagnosis
- control
A
- swine are mixing vessels bc have receptors for both human and avian flu. signs = anorexia, fever, nasal discharge, cough.
- nasal secretions from close contact and aerosol
- is zoonotic
- easily changes/recombines/mutates
- worldwide
- virus isolation, ELISA (ag capture), RT-PCR, IHC, IFA, hemagglutination inhibition asasy
- PRRSV, porcine circovirus,
- vaccines, biosecurity
