Orthographic change Flashcards
there are many difficulties with the spelling system
silent letters, some words are spelt the same but sound different and vice versa
The alphabet
the Roman alphabet was introduced to Britain in the 6th century. The Old English alphabet was similar to our current one but didn’t include the consonants - j, q, v, k, z
Caxton
attempted to regularise spelling so he could produce texts
The Great Vowel Shift mid 14th - 18th century
there was a gradual change of vowel pronunciation, where the production of long vowels was raised so that the position of the tongue moved closer to the roof of the mouth. (boat to boot)
The English Spelling Society 1908
has worked hard to promote a simplified spelling system - one that would address some of the inconsistencies and problems that make spelling so difficult for users
