Ortho/Neuro Instruments Flashcards
Needle Nose Pliers: Pliers: can manipulate wires and stabilize broke bones
Cottonoids: Patties: help protect tissue in neuro cases and aid in dissection, fluid management and hemostasis
Large Bone Pin Cutter: Double Action Pin Cutter: helps with fracture repairs: will cut large Ortho Pins and wire implants
Cannulated Pin Cutter: Expertly cuts everything
Meade Ortho Mallet: Hammer: helps cut through bone when hit against a osteotome or bone gouge
Cerebellar Retractor: Adson Cerebellar: helps retract the cerebellum and can either be dull or sharp
Curette: used to debulk bone in ortho has a scoop tip that helps in scraping off debris to give access to a surgical site
Bone Rongeur: double action it can help strip tissues off of bones or to remove portions of bone
Bone Hook: can retract bones or be used to create an alignment when setting bones
Bandage Scissors: Utility Scissors: used to cut through materials like bandages, umbilical cords, and dressings
Bone Gouge: Chisel: used with a mallet to clean out cartilage and also to remove strips of bone
Senn Retractors: either end can be used for retraction
Bone Tamp: Bone Impactor: helps reduce fractures and manage bone grafts and can be used in spinal procedures to help hold canal in place until its permanently set
Kerrison: Used a lot in laminectomies to sculpt bone tissue and comes in various angles and sizes
Hohmann Retractor: Bone Lever: used to keep incision open: used a lot in anterior hip replacements to help keep the bone and skin separated to have a clear view to cut
Cobra Retractor: used a lot on anterior hip replacemets: its shape helps it navigate nerve roots
Osteotome: manipulate bones or aid in being struck by a mallet to cut scrape or shave bone to increase access to surgical field
Reciprocating Saw Blade: used with a saw to cut through sturdy bone and can be used to remove plaster casts
Oscillating Saw Blade: cuts side to side at a 90 degree angle cut through hard tissue and bone
Drill Bit: used to create or enlarge tunnels in bones to accommodate a screw or other fixation device
Drill Guide: helps avoid drill wobbling: and helps ensure that pins and screws follow the surgeons intended trajectory without damaging the surrounding tissues
Orthopedic Screwdriver: Screwdriver: tighten or remove or loosen screws or to secure bone fragments
Nerve Hook: used in craniotomies and spinal surgeries to retract delicate nerve structures
