Orofacial Pain attributed to lesion or disease of CNs Flashcards
give 2 conditions resulting from pain attributed to disease of trigeminal nerve
Trigeminal Neuralgia
painful trigeminal neuropathies
give 2 conditions resulting from pain attributed to disease of glossopharyngeal nerve
glossopharyngeal Neuralgia
painful glossopharyngeal neuropathies
how does TN present?
unilateral severe electric shock like pain that recurs
pain lasts up to 2 mins
limited to one or more divisions of CN5 (no radiation beyond division)
triggered by non-harmful stimuli within CN5 division
may be accompanied by continuous pain within CN5 distributions
give 3 types of TN and causes for each
classical - caused by vascular compression
secondary - caused by underlying disease
idiopathic - no apparent cause
what radiograph should be done to investigate TN?
high resolution MRI
what warrants refferal of TN pt?
sensory/motor deficits
deafness or other ear problems
optic neuritis
hx of malignancy
bilateral TN pain
systemic symptoms - fever, weight loss
presentation in <30yr olds
