‘Bawling’- crying. Repetition of home show’s desperation.
“Eyes of a blind toy, holding its paw”
She is blindsided by the fact she doesn’t know where she’s going. She is holding its paw for support.
“All childhood is an emigration”
Growing up is moving on and eventual so you can never go back.
“As the miles rushed back to the city”
Personification shows her desire to go back. Shows the vast distance.
“Your accent wrong.”
Short sentence shows how sudden the change was and refers to language barrier despite speaking the same language.
“Big boys eating worm… brother swallow a slug”
Contrast. She is threatened. By the big boys. Her brother later doing the same shows how they’re adapting.
“My parent’s anxiety stirred like a loose tooth”
Simile of her parents worry like a constant annoyance or irritation.
“Skelf of shame”
Shows she’s still retained some of her Scottish accent showing she’s still adjusting.
“Tongue shedding it’s skin like a snake”
Shows she’s lost her accent and has changed a lot.
“And I hesitate”
Shows she is hesitant and has mixed feelings about where she’s from and how she wasn’t as easy to adapt.
