How did Descartes help with psychology?

A

Descartes suggested that the mind and body are independent to each other. Though challenged, this view suggested that the mind can be studied independently. He demonstrated his own existence with the phrase ‘I think therefore I am’.

How did Locke help with psychology? What approach does it support?

A

Locke proposed empiricism. This is the idea that all experiences can be obtained through the senses, and that human beings do not inherit any knowledge or instincts.
This view forms the basis of the behaviourist approach.

How did Darwin help with psychology?

A

Darwin’s evolutionary theory suggests that all animal behaviour has changed over generation, so individuals with stronger, adaptive genes survive and reproduce. Those with weaker genes don’t survive and reproduce.

This view forms the basis of the biological approach.
