origins of psychology Flashcards
Who was Wundt
- first psychologist
- believed we could break down perception and memory into basic elements
what was Wundt’s method
introspection
what was introspection
means “looking into ones self”
participants were asked to reflect on an object and image and say what they thought
scientific method in psychology
- objective and systematic
- do not include bias
- results have to be replicable otherwise not reliable
- if results are not reliable they cannot be recognised as universally true
weakness is that Wundt’s methods were unreliable
participants were asked to reflect and recall conscious experiences which are an unobservable construction
method couldn’t be repeated by other researchers
weakness is that a scientific approach is not always appropriate
not all psychologists think psychology should be explored with scientific methods
psychology is unobservable therefore cannot be measured with accuracy
