endocrine system + nervous system Flashcards
what is the endocrine system
it is a messenger system of hormones released by glands to regulate organs
role of hormones
they are chemical messengers released into the bloodstream
hormones influence behaviour these include aggression, mating and parenting
an imbalance in hormones can lead to a number of disorders
adrenal glands job
it sits on top of the kidney
releases adrenaline which triggers fight or flight response to a threat
pituitary glands job
found at the base of the brain
it is known as the master gland which controls all the glands
secretes the growth hormone, endorphins for pain relief
thyroids job
located within the neck
releases metabolism which controls our appetite
characteristics of the motor neurone
- carry messages from CNS to effectors
- form a synapse with muscles
- nucleus is in the middle of the neurone
characteristics of relay neurone
- carry messages from one part of CNS to another
- connect sensory neurone to motor neurone
- found in the brain and spinal cord
- nucleus on top of neurone
characteristics of sensory neurones
- takes information from senses
- the sensation reaches brain and then become impulses
- some impulses reach spinal cord instead to make a reflex
- nucleus is at the side of the neurone
