Origins Of Life Flashcards
What is evolution?
Evolution is the adaption of life forms in order to suit their environment.
What are common features?
Common features are characteristics that life forms share such as whales having the same wrist and finger bones as humans, lions having the same ribcages as humans and dolphins embryos having the same nose canal as human embryos. This suggests that all beings evolved from a single ancestor.
What is the scientist response to the origin of life?
Evolution
What is the Christian response to the origin of life?
Genesis 2
What is genesis 2?
Genesis 2 tells us how god created all the different creatures on earth. All animals being made as exactly we see them today. The first man was created from dust but since there was no other like him god created woman from Adam one of his ribs.
How is the Christian response unreliable?
Genesis 2 suggests that all humans were made by only two people, meaning we would all be related and perhaps look very similar rather than have the vast features we have now. It also suggests that all animals were made as they are now were perfect at the beginning of time which would not count for vestigial structures.
What are vestigial structures?
Vestigial structures are bones or organs which are now functionless through evolution.
Name three vestigial structures within humans
Appendix, tailbone and goosebumps
What main factor is the evidence for evolution?
DNA
How does DNA apply to evolution?
DNA mutation through creatures having children, which causes their DNA to mix, means that their children have shared characteristics from both parents which have survived through natural selection to obtain greater features to help them survive. Such as camouflage skin.
How do Christians justify common features without believing in evolution?
God created creatures with common features as his designs were perfect so he reused aspects. While others believe it just happened naturally without god’s interference.
What acronym tells us all evidence for evolution?
F- Fossil
E- embryology
C- Common features
D- DNA
What is embryology?
The study of embryos. Shows us that embryos of different species are similar at some points.
What 5 things support the theory of evolution?
Fossils
Embryology
Common features
DNA
Vestigial organ
What is natural selection?
The selection of species which survive their climate while those without the features that allow others to survive perish.
