The Second World War ended in Europe in May 1945, after the allies invaded Germany. Hitler had committed suicide and Germany surrendered unconditionally. It was another four months before Japan surrendered after the USA had dropped the first atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
