Personification- Shows her own desire to head back to home, to where she is known and knows
“I stared at the eyes of a blind toy, holding its paw”
“Stared”- Unlikely her brother, she is silent and in shock
“Blind”- Word choice. Highlights her uncertainty as she can’t see what will happen in the future.
“Paw”- She is looking for comfort and reassurance. Shows her anxiety and also how young she is
“All childhood is an emmigration”

Considered wider experience of childhood which has changes and transitions that you don’t often choose
“Anxiety stirred like a loose tooth”
Simile- Initial optimism of mum is gone. Shows that while she is aware of her parents anxiety and fears they don’t impact on her life greatly. It is like a nagging sensation that is always there
“My Tongue shedding its skin like a snake”
Simile- Conveys the idea of change. She is growing and having to leave the old behind and adapt to the new way of life.
