Orientation Flashcards
How many carbon atoms are in the following molecule—C5H10?
5
How many carbon atoms are present in monoterpenes?
10
What atoms mainly make up the molecules of essential oils?
Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
What does “oxidation” mean?
An oxygen molecule broke a double bond, usually between two carbon atoms, and stuck itself to one of the carbons—creating a new molecule that is different from the original one. (Eventually the process of oxidation changes the essential oil and the oil can become skin irritating.)
Are Certified Aromatherapists licensed to diagnose or treat specific medical conditions?
No. Certified Aromatherapists are not licensed medical professionals (unless they’re working under a different healthcare license), and cannot prescribe or replace medical treatments.
How many drops are in a 2% dilution when blending into 1 oz (30 ml) of jojoba wax?
10-12
What are essential oils made of?
Chemical molecules, often referred to as “constituents.”
What are some good ways to move through confusion during your self study process?
Take a few conscious, deep breaths. Pause your studies and go do something else. Try studying in a different way. Take a walk, stretch, or do something physical.
What are three easy ways to prevent oxidation of essential oils?
Keep them cool, keep them in a tightly sealed bottle, and keep them in the dark
What are three reasons for using a 1% dilution?
Blending for emotional issues, blending for use during pregnancy, blending for a person with a compromised immune system, blending for children, and blending for facial use.
What are two Aromatherapy organizations that are dedicated to enhancing public awareness and education of Aromatherapy, which have set standards for Aromatherapy Certification?
NAHA (National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy) and AIA (the Alliance of International Aromatherapists).
What does using an oil “neat” mean?
Applying it undiluted.
What is a hydrocarbon?
Hydrogen and carbon bonded together.
When labeling Aromatherapy products you’re selling, can you make claims about what medical or therapeutic properties they offer?
No. The FDA strictly prohibits making claims about whether essential oils and Aromatherpy products offer healing or therapeutic effects.
Where does oxygen like to attach itself to a molecule?
Where there is a double bond.
