Q

What should you consider when adding floral or spicy oils (like Jasmine and Ginger) to an inhaler?

A

These oils should be limited to a small percentage of your overall blend of 10-15 drops. For example: In an inhaler for nausea, you could use 3 drops Ginger, 3 drops Peppermint, 3 drops Orange, 6 drops Rosewood. Notice that the spicy oil is at a small percentage—just 3 drops. Also, when using Peppermint in any blend, only a few drops are needed.

Q

Why should you not use water to flush your eye if essential oil gets in it?

A

Essential oils are lipophilic, meaning they are attracted to fat—like the membranes of your eye and skin. Essential oils are hydrophobic, meaning they do not like water. Flushing with water will only send the essential oil back to the eye’s membranes. Wiping with carrier oil will create another fat for the essential oil to be attracted to other than the membranes of the eye.

18
Q

How many drops of essential oil do you generally use for an inhaler?

A

10-15

19
Q

How many total drops of essential oil are in a 2% blend made in 2 oz (60 ml) of lotion?

A

20-24

20
Q

How many total drops of essential oil should you put in 1 oz (30 ml) of Trauma Oil for a 25-year-old healthy male with a mildly sprained ankle?

A

3% dilution, 15-18 drops total. (If this was a more severe injury, you could make up to a 10% dilution for short-term use of about a week.)

21
Q

How much research has been done about which essential oils cross the placenta?

A

Little to no research has been done. It’s best to assume essential oils will cross the placenta.

22
Q

In a steam, how many drops of essential oil can be added to the hot water?

A

1-2 drops

23
Q

Is Bergamot a good choice for lip balm?

A

No, it is phototoxic.

24
Q

Is Bergamot applied at the beach a good way to get a tan?

A

Not unless you want a severe sun burn and permanent skin discoloration.

25
Q

Is Lemongrass a good choice for the diffuser?

A

No, it’s best to avoid using oils high in aldehydes, phenols or ethers in a diffuser.

26
Q

Is Rose essential oil a good choice for aging, mature skin?

A

Yes!

27
Q

Is Sandalwood a good choice for the diffuser?

A

t really, since thick oils can clog up the diffuser. Thick oils are heavy and do not diffuse well.

28
Q

Name all the phototoxic oils covered in this course:

A

Lemon, Grapefruit, Bergamot

29
Q

Once I have my blended bath salt, how much can I use in my bath?

A

About 1 oz (30 ml), which would have 5-6 drops of essential oil in it.

30
Q

Since I can only use one or two drops in a steam, does that mean I can only use one or two different essential oils?

A

No! You can make a stock bottle that is a blend of many oils, and then use just one or two drops of this mixture.

31
Q

The more beeswax added to a butter blend results in what type of consistency?

A

Harder

32
Q

What are the special concerns related to making bath salts?

A

Avoid oils that irritate the skin and mucous membranes. Use a low percentage of spicy oils. Don’t even think about using Peppermint! Always add carrier oil or castile soap to disperse the oils and protect the skin in the bath water.

33
Q

What dilution rate is best for bath salts?

A

1%, or 5 to 6 drops of essential oil per bath (mixed with a little bit of carrier oil to be extra safe to the skin).

34
Q

What does GC/MS stand for?

A

Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry

35
Q

What is the difference between a bath salt and salt scrub?

A

A salt scrub is specifically for the skin and used to gently massage onto the skin for a healthy glow and then rinsed off. Bath salt is added to the bath water to sit in.

36
Q

What is the general dilution ratio for a massage oil?

A

2%

37
Q

What is the trick to adding shea butter to a body butter blend?

A

Add it after other ingredients have melted and the pot is off the heat.

38
Q

What plant part do the most common essential oils for steaming come from?

A

Leaves and needles: Eucalyptus, Siberian Fir, Ravintsara

39
Q

What should I do if I get essential oil in my eye?

A

get essential oil in my eye?
Wash your hands first, then wipe the eye with a carrier oil like jojoba or olive oil. Wipe off the carrier with paper towel and repeat as needed. Then rinse the eye with continuous flow of saline solution if needed.

40
Q

When applied to the skin with a carrier, which aromatic notes evaporate immediately, and which notes linger the longest?

A

Top notes evaporate quickly, base notes last the longest.

41
Q

When making a water or hydrosol-based spray, does the essential oil fully disperse into the water?

A

No. When you shake up the blend, tiny globules of essential oil will be sprayed. Therefore, in a spray for the skin, be sure to use skin nourishing oils and consider adding a dispersant such as Solubol.

42
Q

When making an inhaler, do you dilute the essential oil first in a carrier or not?

A

No carrier—use the oil undiluted in an inhaler.

43
Q

Which two chemical families would you use very carefully when making an inhaler?

A

Phenols and aldehydes. (Let’s be careful about ethers, too!)

44
Q

You’re making a blend to help balance your client’s emotional energy. What percentage dilution do you stick to?

A

1-2%
