Orgo Synth 3: Grignard Reaction Day 1 Flashcards
What is the Grignard reaction?
The Grignard reaction helps form carbon-carbon bonds which is an important ability to build larger molecules.
What makes the Grignard reagent reactive?
The nucleophilic and basic nature of the Grignard reagent makes it very reactive and therefore the reaction conditions have to be selectively chosen to not hinder its activity.
What is quenching in terms of a Grignard reaction?
The presence of water, or analogues to water such as alcohols, will destroy the organometallic reagent. process known as quenching.
What is the danger of working with Ether?
extremely volatile and flammable
What is the purpose of a condenser?
condense the solvent vapours so that after a period of heating there is a minimal solvent loss
