drop the -e and add -ol (methanol)
How do you determine an alcohol?
-OH attached to the alkyl group
How do you name carboxylic acids?
-e is dropped and -oic + acid is added (methanoic acid)
How do you determine a carboxylic acid?
usually written as -COOH, C w/ double bond to O and single bond to OH
How do you name an ester?
-ic of the acid name is dropped + -ate is added, alkyl group is named separately (ethyl propanoate)
How do you determine an ester?
contain a C w/ a double bond to O and a single bond to O
How do you name an ether?
named as oxy- derivatives, (methoxyethane)
How do you determine an ether?
oxygen atom is joined by two separate hydrocarbon groups (R-O-R)
How do you name a ketone?
-one ending (butanone), functional group is given lowest possible #
How do you determine a ketone?
C w/ double bond to O
How do you name an aldehyde?
drop -e and add -al (methanal)
