orginization of nervous system Flashcards
what 4 things does the nervous system do?
- regulate muscle contraction–regulate movement
- regulate secretions from glands
- gather info about internal/external environment–maintain homeostasis
- stimulate thirst, hunger, survival mechanisms
what is the nervous system?
network of neurons & support (glial) cells
what system deals with centralization and cephalization?
Central Nervous System (CNS)
centralization components:
brain and spinal cord
cephalization components:
concentration of nervous structures into one end of body
-brain
2 types of neural circuits in spinal cord
local
ascending/descending
local neural circuit
- control the output of that segment
- primitive reflexes
- all types of neurons in same segment
ascending/descending neural circuits
-communication to/from the brain for higher integration
grey matter
- cell bodies
- synapses
- unmylinated axons
white matter
- tracts of myelinated axons
- ascending and descending
tract
bundle of myelinated axons
groups of nerve cell bodies in CNS
nuclei
bundle of neuron axons in PNS
nerve
2 types of nerves
- cranial
2. spinal
