Organs in the Digestive Tract Flashcards
Mouth
The mouth is the first part of the digestive system and is made of a compartment to hold food while you chew, the teeth are small bone structures which crush down food. The mouths structure also has saliva glands to produce it.
Oesophagus
The oesophagus is a small tube around 25cm long in humans which leads from the mouth into the stomach. To carry the broken-down food from the mouth down in the stomach to continue the digestion process. It is mechanical but doesn’t break down anything, its main purpose is to carry food from the mouth into the stomach.
Stomach
To hold broken down food for a prolonged time and to also help break out and take out proteins from the food you have eaten. It does this using the stomach acids/hydrochloric acid, proteins are taken out here because protein prefers to be in high acidic places because it uses these acids it is a chemical breakdown to take the needed nutrients from the food.
Pancreas
The function of the pancreas is to produce the pancreatic fluids which contain enzymes that break down sugars, fats and other things the food contains like starches and carbohydrates.
Small Intestine
The small intestine is a rough looking tube which is folded around in the middle of the belly region it has a point of entry from the stomach and exit into the large intestine. It is made up of small ‘finger’ like rigids that has blood vessels this is so the nutrients can be taken into the blood stream as fast as possible and so that the most can be taken out in the amount of given time.
Large Intestine
The function of the large intestine is to take out most of the water so it can be turned into the faeces, this is lead into the rectum this is where the poo is stored then the anus then takes out.
Liver
The liver regulates most chemical levels in the blood and excretes a product called bile. This helps carry away waste products from the liver. All the blood leaving the stomach and intestines passes through the liver.
Rectal Cavity
The main purpose of the Rectal Cavity is to store the waste from the large intestine.
Anus
To move the waste from the Rectal Cavity out of the human body.
