Organs and Organ Systems Flashcards
Examples of organs
Heart, kidney, brain, root, stem
What 3 tissues are the stomach made up of and what do they do?
Muscular tissue to churn contents
Glandular tissue to produce digestive juices
Epithelial to cover the outside and the inside of the stomach
Name the plant organs
Root
Stem
Leaf
Function of root
Absorbs minerals and water from the soil
Function of stem
Transports water and minerals from the roots and glucose from the leaves
Function of a leaf
Photosynthesis which is the process by which green plants use sunlight to synthesize nutrients from carbon dioxide and water. Photosynthesis in plants generally involves the green pigment chlorophyll and generates oxygen as a by-product.
What 3 tissues are the stem made up of and what do they do
Vascular tissue Xylem tissues to transport water Phloem vessels to transport sugars Cambium to form new cells Structural tissue: epidermis, cortex and pith
What is a organ
An organ is a structure made up of a group of tissues, working together to perform specific functions.
One organ may contain several different types of tissues
An organ is a relatively independent part of the body that carries out one or more special functions
What are organ systems
Organ systems are groups of organs with related functions, that work together to perform body functions.
The digestive system is an example where in mammals exchange substances with the environment.
Name all the organ systems
The endocrine system The cardiovascular system The reproductive system The respiratory system The nervous system
Name the plant organ systems
The shoot system
The root system
What does the endocrine system do and what organs does it use
Function - produces hormones
Uses many different glands throughout the body eg. Pancreas, ovaries
What does the cardiovascular system do and what organs does it use
Function - transports blood around the body
Uses heart, arteries, veins and capillaries
What does the reproductive system do and what organs does it use
Function - produce offspring
Organs used =
Females: Males: Uterus Penis Ovaries Testes Oviducts Vagina
What does the respiratory system do and what organs does it use
Function - exchange of gases in and out the blood
Organs used include: Nasal cavity Diaphragm Trachea Ribs Bronchi Intercostal muscles Bronchioles Alveoli
