Microbes Flashcards
How do bacteria reproduce
Produce spores to survive harsh conditions
Reproduce by binary fission
Split in 1/2 every 20 minutes
Characteristics of bacteria
Larger than viruses
Cause disease by releasing poisons and multiplying quickly
Cells have a loop of DNA, cell wall and cytoplasm
Used to make yogurt
No nucleas
An example of a virus
Common cold
How do viruses reproduce
They make copies of themselves in a host cell until the host cell bursts causing the copies to be spread around and repeat the process
Characteristics of a virus
Tiny simple structures
Have DNA and protein coat
Cause disease by invading cells and making millions of copies
No good uses
An example of a fungus
Ringworm
How do fungi reproduce
Spores are spread through the wind/air, water and animals
How do fungi feed
Saprotrophs
They secrete enzymes onto food
Characteristics of fungi
Can be single cellular or multi-cellular
Cause disease by growing fast and releasing poisons
Used to make bread
Have a nucleas, vacuole, cell membrane and cytoplasm
An example of a bacteria
Salmonella - food poisoning
