Where food enters the alimentary canal and digestion begins
What is the Oesophagus?
Muscular tube which moves ingested food to the stomach
What is the function of the Stomach?
Food enters into the stomach through a ring called the sphincter. The stomach churns up the food into a liquid called chyme. Stomach acids kill the bacteria on the food
What does the Liver do in relation to digestion?
It produces bile
What does the Gall Bladder do in relation of digestion?
Stores bile before releasing it into the duodenum
What does the Pancreas do?
Releases hormones which control glucose levels in your blood. When blood sugar drop insulin secretion is replaced by glucagon, which converts glycogen back into glucose. After eating insulin is released, which puts excess glucose to convert into glycogen for storage in the liver
What does bile do?
It neutralises the acid in the small intestine, and it emulsifies fats providing a larger surface area over which the lipase enzymes can work efficiently
What is the function of the salivary gland?
To produce saliva containing amylase
What does the pancreas do in relation to digestion?
It produces digestive enzymes
What is the function of the ileum (part of the small intestine)?
Where digested food is absorbed into the blood and lymph
What is the function of the Duodenum (part of the small intestine)?
Where food is mixed with digestive enzymes and bile
What is the function of the colon (part of the large intestine)?
Where water is reabsorbed
What is the function of the rectum (part of the large intestine)?
Where faeces is stored
What is the function of the anus (part of the large intestine)?
Where faeces is excreted
