Organohalogen Compounds In The Environment Flashcards
1
Q
What are some uses of organohalogen compounds?
A
- solvents
- pesticides
- flame retardants
2
Q
Why are organohalogen compounds an issue?
A
They are not broken down naturally by the environment
3
Q
Describe what is happening in the ozone layer.
A
- UV continuously causes ozone to be broken down and formed
- Initially UV breaks oxygen molecules down into oxygen radicals
- The rate of oxygen formation is equal to the rate of oxygen hydrolysis
4
Q
What happens when CFCs reach the stratosphere?
A
They begin to break down forming chlorine radicals which catalyse the breakdown of the ozone layer.
5
Q
How so CFCs deplete the ozone layer?
A
- Photodissociation of the CFCs form chlorine radicals
- Cl. + O3 —> ClO. + O2
ClO. + O3 —> 2O2 + Cl. - Chlorine radical is regenerated so the cycle is repeated over and over again
