Infrared Spectroscopy Flashcards
1
Q
What does the amount that a bond stretches or bends depend upon?
A
- The mass of the atoms
—> the heavier the atom, the slower the vibrations - The bond strength
—> stronger bonds vibrate faster
2
Q
How is infrared spectroscopy used to identify functional groups?
A
- Sample is placed inside IR spectrometer
- A beam of IR radiation is passed through the sample
- The molecule absorbs some of the IR frequencies, and the emerging beam of radiation is analysed to identify which frequencies have been absorbed
3
Q
Where is the fingerprint region found?
A
Below 1500cm-1
4
Q
What steps do you follow to analyse an IR spectrum?
A
- Remove fingerprint region
- Identify if C-H peak is present
- Identify any other functional group peaks
5
Q
What are some applications of Infrared Spectroscopy?
A
- forensic science
- quality control in manufacturing
- drug analysis
