Organizing And Displaying Data Flashcards
What is rank order distribution?
Ordered listing of data in a single column (useful with relatively small numbers)
What is range (R)?
Distance from highest to lowest value
Simple frequency distribution
The number of cases (f) at each given value
Grouped frequency distribution
Grouped data into bins which is a range of values. The number of persons who performed in each group of scores
How can data be displayed?
- Spreadsheet (table)
- Graphs - histogram (bar graph) or frequency polygon (line graph)
Curve
A line that results when scores (x) are plotted against frequency (y) on a graph
Normal curve
- bell shaped
- symmetrical
- mean, median and mode are all the same
- frequency of scores declines in a predictable manner as scores deviate farther and farther form the centre
Central limit theorem
A sum of random numbers becomes normally distributed as more and more of random numbers are added together
Bimodial curve
Distribution that has two modes
Skewed curve
Distribution where a disproportionate number of subjects score toward one end of the scale (negative or positive skew)
How do you know if data is presented in a normal curve?
- Symmetrical curve
- Asymptotic - line that never fully reaches zero
- Mean, median and mode are all the same
