What is the reason that businesses need a organized structure of authority?
Its tells employees what their role is and the responsibilities that come with it, it also tells the employee who their superiors and subordinates are.
What are the two categories of organizational structure?
There are tall organizational structures and flat organizational structures
What are the aspects of a tall organizational structure?
In a tall organizational structure, there are many levels of authority and employees in the business
What are the aspects of a flat organizational structure?
In a tall organizational structure, there are only a few levels of authority and employees in the business
What are the types of organizational structures?
The types are functional, divisional, matrix, and hybrid.
Explain each type of organizational structure
Functional: it divides the company to different departments based on specialty
EX. Sales department, Marketing department, etc
Divisional: the company is broken down into smaller sections based on different projects/products
EX. Gap company > Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic
Matrix: employees have multiple bosses and reporting lines
EX. They have a department boss for work and a corporate boss for salary, discipline, promotions, etc
Hybrid: the power is spread across multiple positions and people
EX. It opens up lines of communication, and allows collaboration
What are the five ways to motivate employees through job design?
They are decentralization, alternative work structure, enrichment, job sharing, and contract work
Explain the five ways to motivate employees
Decentralization: is when daily operations and decision making responsibilities are decided by lower management or lower level employees
Alternative Work Structure: gives employees the freedom and flexibility to handle their work on their own time compared to a set office schedule
Enrichment: is an approach to job design that is based on motivating personnel by having the the job itself provide opportunities for achievement, recognition, responsibility, advancement and growth
Job Sharing: is when two people are hired on a part-time to perform a job normally fulfilled by one person working full-time.
Contract Work: is employment that involves hiring a person for a specific job under particular terms for a fixed period of time
