What is the definition of communication?
The transactional and relational process involving the meaningful exchange of information
Define communication in your own words
When 2 or more people are having a purposeful conversation
What is professionalism?
It is when you act knowledgeably, can be fluid, and add value to any situation
What are the 3 aspects of communication?
Situational, Relational, and Transactional
What does situational communication mean?
All communication has a particular context to it
What does relational communication mean?
It is when you take into account the person/people you are communicating with, and understand the purpose of the communication
What does transactional communication mean?
It is the understanding that communication is where more than one person is sharing information
What are some barriers to effective communication?
Noise, Channel Overload, Info Overload, Semantic Interference, Emotional Interference, and written work is not edited
Explain two of the barriers to effective communication
Semantic Interference is when certain word/phrases can be misinterpreted due to context or cultural differences
Info Overload is when the receiver is given to much information to absorb at once
What are two ways to overcome communication barriers?
Be purposeful in you conversation/communication and be a good listener/reader when you are the receiver
What is interpersonal communication
It is verbal and non-verbal communication between 2 or more people
What are the aspects of interpersonal communication
Making sure the meaning of the communication is understood by all and having the receiver(s) trust and want to listen to your communication
What are the 4 components of non-verbal interpersonal communication?
Proxemics: is your use of the space and the distance between the the two people communicating
Chronemics: is your use of time, how long the conversation is and the pace of it
Vocalics: is non-verbal vocal qualities, pitch, volume, tempo, pauses
Kenesics: is your body language, gestures, posture, eye contact, facial expressions
What is the flow of information?
It is the way info travels from one level to another in a company
What are the three directions of the flow of information
Upward communication, which is when subordinates send info to their superiors
Downward communication, which is when superiors send info to their subordinates
Horizontal communication, which is when people on the same level communicate to each other
What is socio-cultural context
It is when a language and its corresponding culture are linked together
What are the four aspects of socio-cultural context
Culture: is the values and behavior of a society
Ethnocentrism: is when people make assumptions based on their limited knowledge that one culture is better than another
High Culture Context: is when a cultures communication is heavily non-verbal and has many nuances specific to that culture
Low Culture Context: is when a cultures communication is heavily verbal and the communication is very literal
