Organization of the Human Body Flashcards
What are the four main tissue types?
Epithelial, Connective, Muscular, Nervous
What does the epithelial tissue do?
Covers surfaces and protects
What does the connective tissue do?
Holds the body together
What does the muscular tissue do?
Allows the body to move
What does the nervous tissue do?
Sends messages throughout the body, senses stimuli and rapidly transmits information.
What is epithelial tissue?
Sheets of closely packed cells that cover body surfaces and line internal organic and cavities
What is the most abundant tissue in most animals?
Skeletal (causes voluntary movements), Cardiac (pumps blood), Smooth (moves walls of internal organs, such as the intestines)
What do neurons do?
Carry signals by conducting electrical impulses.
What is an organ?
A collection of tissues joined together to serve a common function
What does the integumentary system do?
- Barrier against infection
- Helps regulate temperature
- Removes waste
- Senses environment by touch
- Protects against UV rays
What does the muscular system do?
- Connects to bones with tendons
- Allows body movement
- Pumps blood
What does the skeletal system?
- Supports the body
- Protects internal organs
- Stores minerals
- Makes new blood cells
What does the circulatory system?
- Circulates oxygen and CO2
- Circulates nutrients
- Aides in waste elimination
- Circulates blood cells
What do capillaries do?
Bring nutrients and oxygen to the tissues and carries waste products away
What does the respiratory system do?
- Exchanges carbon dioxide for oxygen
- Allows our bodies to convert glucose into energy
