Organization of the Body Flashcards
Body System
circulatory system
heart, blood, arteries, veins, capillaries
-transports blood throughout the body
Body System
lymphatic system
lymph vessels and nodes
-carry clear fluid called lymph
-lymph contain white blood cells called
lymphocytes that fight against disease and play an
important role in immunity
Body System
digestive system
mouth, stomach, intestines
-brings food into the body and breaks it down
Body System
endocrine system
glands
-sends chemical messengers called hormones into the blood to act on other glands and organs
Body System
female and male reproductive systems
produce the cells (eggs and sperm) that join to form the embryo, which develops in the uterus of a female
-male (testes) and female (ovaries) sex
organs produce hormones as well
Body System
musculoskeletal system
muscles, bones, joints, and other connective tissue such as cartilage
-supports the body and allows it to move
Body System
nervous system
-carries electrical messages to and from the brain and spinal cord
Body System
respiratory system
trachea, bronchial tubes, lungs
- controls breathing
Body System
skin and sense organ system
skin, eyes, ears
- receives messages from the
environment and sends them to the
brain
Body System
urinary system
kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra
- produces urine and sends it out of the
body
Body Cavity
cranial cavity
contains the brain and other organs (glands)
Body Cavity
thoracic cavity
chest cavity, surrounded by the breastbone and ribs
- lungs are each surrounded by a
double membrane known as the pleura
- space between the pleural membranes is the
pleural cavity
- large area between the lungs is the mediastinum
Body Cavity
abdominal cavity
space below the thoracic cavity - diaphragm is the muscle that separates the abdominal and thoracic cavities - organs in the abdomen are covered by a double membrane called the peritoneum
Body Cavity
pelvic cavity
below the abdominal cavity
- surrounded by the pelvis
Body Cavity
spinal cavity
space surrounded by the spinal column
- spinal cord is the nervous tissue within the spinal cavity
