Industrial action (definition)
Collective employee actions taken to protest work conditions or actions by an employer; also includes employer actions taken in response
Industrial actions - by employees
- general strike
- sit-down strike
- sympathy strike
- wildcat strike
- secondary action or boycott
- work-to-rule
- overtime ban
- picketing
Sympathy strike - action taken in support of another union that is striking the employer
Wildcat strike - work stoppage that wasn’t sanctioned by the union
Secondary action - attempt to influence an employer by putting pressure on another employer, such as a supplier
Work-to-rule - workers slow processes by performing tasks exactly to specs
Industrial action - by employers
Primarily lockout, where employer shuts down operations to prevent employees from working
Constructive discipline (or progressive discipline)
Form of corrective action that implements increasingly severe penalties intended to shape behavior
- Verbal counseling and problem-solving
- Formal warning (verbal or written, depending on policy)
- Possible 2nd and/or final warning with deadline and suspension if needed
- Demotion or termination
Third-party dispute resolution (or alternative dispute resolution) options

Ombudsperson - neutral 3rd party (from inside or outside organization) investigates employee complaints, mediates if possible, or brings to management
Single designated officer - management selects someone to investigate complaints and resolve disputes
Chosen officer - employee can select arbitrator from group
Peer review - panel of employees and managers work together to hear and resolve employee complaints
Mediation - neutral 3rd party aims to facilitate a voluntary agreement
Arbitration - 3rd party hears both sides and makes a binding decision
