Organization in the Body Flashcards
The human body has a ___ organization.
Hierarchical
What does it mean that the body has a hierarchical organization?
It’s made up of nested layers, each one more complex than the last.
What are the 4 layers of organization?
Cells –> tissues –> organs – organ systems
What are tissues?
A collection of similar, specialized cells.
What are organs?
Organs are structures that are made up of different types of tissues to help the organ function.
What are organ systems?
Groups of organs that work together to carry out complex functions of the body.
What is the nervous system?
An organ system that allows us to sense and respond to our environment.
What are sensory receptors?
Specialized cells which pick up signals (called stimuli) from the environment.
What are the different types of stimuli?
-Mechanical (touch and heading)
-Chemical (taste and smell)
-Electromagnetic (sight in the form of light)
What happens when a sensory receptor receives stimuli?
It passes the information along via nerve cells, which transmits information in the form of electrical signals. These signals are transmitted to the brain, which is responsible for processing sensory info.
