Organism Growth and Reproduction Flashcards
What is reproduction?
Reproduction is the process by which organisms create new life. Genetic information is passed to the offspring which provides a blueprint for how the organism will grow and develop.
What are the two types of reproduction?
Asexual and sexual reproduction.
What is asexual reproduction?
Only one parent is involved.
What is sexual reproduction?
Involves two parents producing an offspring together. The offspring will receive half of each parents genes. The source of genetic variation.
Asexual reproduction will produce offspring that are ___ to the parent
100% identical
Do bacteria reproduce sexually or asexually?
Asexually
What is the method in which bacteria reproduce?
Binary Fission
What is binary fission?
A single bacteria grows, copies its genes, and divides into two identical cells.
Do plants reproduce sexually or asexually?
Asexually
Can animals produce asexually?
Few can. The starfish can split into multiple parts, that then grow into full starfish.
What is reproductive success?
An animal’s reproductive success is related to the number of offspring it has during its life. An animal that has more surviving offspring likely has a higher reproductive success.
What is a factor of reproductive success?
Parental care. Species with higher amounts of parental care have higher reproductive success, since there is someone there to protect the offspring from danger, and teach them survival skills.
What are genes?
The hereditary material inside an organisms cells. Genes provide information about an organism’s traits.
An organism’s traits depend on both its ___ and its ___.
genes / environment
Genes can affect how an organism grows. Any influence of genes is called a ___.
genetic factor
