What are characteristics of organizational culture?
Shared attitudes, experiences, beliefs, values of a group
Culture drives priorities, problem solving approach
Manager needs to provide opportunities to ensure that norms and values of the organization are accepted by staff
How does culture influence productivity?
Integrity, honesty, fairness, respect for others, promise keeping and prudence
If an employee feels that they are unsupported, undermined, or discouraged from pursuing excellence
What are behaviors suggesting unethical behavior?
Misleading advertising, cover up of errors, acceptance of poor quality, favoritism, suppression of rights, nondisclosure, corruption
What are non profits?
Have special corporate exemptions from taxes.
May not pay property of income tax.
Must provide certain benefits to the community: serve the uninsured, forgive bad debt, have programs that lose money, but benefit community
Can make profit but can’t have profit on books at end of fiscal year
What are for profit businesses?
Corporations that distribute profits to investors (stock holders)
Stock holders may be physician, employee, or outside person
Pay taxes like other corporations
What are public facilities?
State or federal run
VA, state social services
Income is not as important as matrix of number served and dollars saved
What are ways to improve organizations according to MIT?
Invent organizations in new social systems that decrease the gap between haves and have nots.
Develop processes that integrate rather than balance work/life of employees.
Broaden criteria for organizational success to include economic, social, environmental.
Rate organization publicaly so comparisons can be made for employment decisions
How are sub groups related to organizational culture?
Managers matter: large companies
Outpatient and inpatient may be seen as separate units
Have to consider the within group culture and between group dynamics
What are things to consider on first job in regards to organizational culture?
Culture shock of fitting in
Process of learning norms, values, attitudes
Difficult to understand
Who holds power
What is formal socialization? Informal?
Orientation: mission, vision, policies, procedures, safety
Employee development and training: customer service, program issue
Mentors assigned
Informal: power in co workers, among peers and employees rather than mangers to employees
